Montgomerys find a riding haven

Monte and Pricilla Montgomery of Tarpley recently took their horses Lady’s Sonnet and Cheyanne’s Blue Bar to the Gillespie Ranch in Mayhill, New Mexico.

Exchanging “Bandera, Cowboy Capital of the World,” for the working cattle ranch located in the cool tall pines of the Lincoln National Forest of New Mexico, the Montgomerys visited with ranch owners, Susan and Kent Gillespie.

With John and Drew Hayner of Hunt, the Montgomerys enjoyed riding trails in the 16,000-acre ranch that hosted wildlife such as trophy elk, mule deer, bear, mountain lion, turkey and quail. They also enjoyed a break from Bandera County’s record heat wave. In New Mexico, daytime temperatures reached only the 80s and nighttime temperatures dropping to the 60s.

“The landscape was rich with emerald green grass,” Pricilla Montgomery said. “Many of the natural wild flowers were in full bloom. Our families enjoyed the beautiful riding trails and the refreshing weather pattern in Mayhill. We look forward to returning to the Gillespie Ranch next summer.”
