Bulldogs disappointed under hoops

By Dylan Stone, BHS

The Bandera High School Bulldogs ran into some more bad luck recently as they faced the hard-charging Ingram Tom Moore Warrior hoopsters. Led by 6’ 6” post Montana Martin, who scored 23 points, the Warriors handed the Bulldogs a 60-54 loss.

“We were outmatched size-wise with their 6’6” post, Martin. He scored almost every time that he had the ball,” said BHS Basketball Coach Brett Morris.

In the first period, the Bulldogs kept pace with the Warriors, scoring 11 to Ingram’s 17. Junior Dustin Lindner led the team in the first quarter with three points, followed by Jeff Jensen, Sean Scott, Zach Young and Derek Draper all adding two points each.

During the second and third periods, the Dogs fell behind, consistently being outscored until the fourth period, when the BHS team came alive with a game high 22-point quarter.

Again, the Dogs were lead by their younger bench of Lindner and Jensen who combined for 11 points in the comeback effort. Senior James Stendebach led the team with three steals, and a dunk.

“Though I am disappointed in the loss, my boys always finish strong and I am proud of their effort and attitude,” said Morris.

The following week, the Dogs traveled to neighboring rival Boerne High School, who possesses the highest home winning percentage in the District 30-3A (.611). Once again, the Bulldogs fell short, losing 53-48.

In the first period, Jensen rocketed out of the gates with five points, aided by Stendebach’s three points, keeping the game close at 13-8. The second period saw much the same back and forth, with the Greyhounds going into the locker room with a 26-18 lead.

Although the Bulldogs had an exceptionally strong fourth period - outscoring Boerne 14-9 - the Greyhounds’ lead was too much to overcome.

“They give themselves a chance to win every game and their effort is tremendous,” said Morris.

Top dogs included Jensen, 10 points; Lindner, nine points; and Draper, Stendebach and Gabe O’Dell with five points each. Defensively, Tyler Stevens led the team with three steals.
