Bulldogs get faster, more competitive

The Bandera boys cross country varsity and junior varsity teams placed sixth out of 10 teams at the Bandera Bulldog Early Season Cross Country Invitational in Bandera City Park on Wednesday, Aug. 30.
With the cancellation of the meet in Uvalde the previous week, this was the boys’ second outing. The team was again led by freshman Christian McKneely, who improved his previous best with a time of 19:19 on the 5K course.
Top seven finishers for the boys were McKneely with a time of 19:19; Dimitri Garcia (junior) with a time of 19:52; Axel Vega (junior) with a time of 20:04; Dakota Utterback (senior) with a time of 20:30; freshman Kelly Columbia (freshman) with a time of 21:28; Isaac Bourg (senior) 21:28; and Logan Dybowski (freshman) with a time of 21:29.
The varsity boys improved their overall team time since the meet in Ingram.
“We are getting more competitive with one another for spots on the team,” Head Boys Cross Country Coach Chris Carter said. “We are a young team with two guys, Columbia and Bourg, making the top seven on the team in their first high school cross country meet.
“We still have long way to go as a team, but we are beginning to take the steps necessary to improve as individuals and as a team. I’m proud of the boys’ effort and their work. It’s rewarding to see them learning how to race.”
The next meet will be Saturday, Sept. 9, for the 2017 Hondo Cross Country Invitational, which is held at the Hondo Municipal Golf Course. Varsity girls will race at 8:30 am, followed by varsity boys at 9 am; junior varsity girls at 9:30 am; and junior varsity boys at 11 am. This meet marks the beginning of the cross country season for Bandera Middle School.
