LadyBulldog basketball celebrated their first win of the 2017 District season against the state-ranked Hondo Owls on Tuesday, Jan. 10, with a score of 62-61. Bandera is part of one of the toughest districts in Region IV Division 4A, with three of the five teams in District 28 ranked in the top 25 Division 4A teams in the state of Texas.
This week’s poll standings by the Texas Girls Coaches Association ranked Boerne 15, Fredericksburg 19 and Hondo tied for 25. Neighbors Liberty Hill ranked fourth in the state, followed by Devine who was ranked 21.
Bandera lost their district season opener against the Greyhounds on Friday, Jan. 6 and are hoping to pull out a win over Boerne when they play them in the final round of district at home on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
The win against the Owls kept the ‘Dogs in the running for a playoff berth and helped propel the LadyDogs into their next game against the Billies.
“Anytime we play Hondo it’s a tough game, very physical and competitive game and this one was!,” Head Girls Basketball Coach Casey Botos said. “Great game that came down to free-throws, even down to the last second of the game. Both teams shooting double bonus.”
Botos felt lessons learned in the game will help the LadyBulldogs down the road.
“We faced many tough situations during this game,” Botos said. “One being that they played a box and one on our point guard Alex Bauml, but she still managed to handle the pressure of one, sometimes two defenders on her. As far as the other members on the court, they learned to execute the offense well and handling the ball up the court. Definitely a team effort.”
Alex Bauml led the LadyDogs against Hondo with 30 points, two assists, nine steals and an offensive and defensive rebound. Other stat leaders for the ‘Dogs were Schmidt, K - ten points, three assists, one block, three steals; Graves, S - five points, one assists, two off and three def rebounds; one block two steals; Antonino, M - seven points, one assists, seven off and six def rebounds, three blocks, 4 steals; Morrow, D - one off rebounds, three def rebounds; Henderson, A - five points, seven off and nine def rebounds, three steals; Owens, M - six points, one off and four def rebounds; Shaw, K - one point, one def rebound.
Later that week, the LadyBulldogs traveled to Fredericksburg to take in the state-ranked Billies, battling another close game, but falling in the end to Fredericksburg 59-47.
“We came into Fredericksburg with confidence,” Botos said. “Last year's win at home against them helped the us know that they are beatable and that we can do it. This year Fredericksburg's personnel is a little different with two posts standing 6'3.”
Bandera prepared offensively for the Billies forbidding posts
“We had a game plan offensively and we executed it well; a little pick and roll action to bring out their bigs and use the speed of our guards to drive past looking for a jumper or pass if the defense was to switch,” Botos said. “I am very proud of the girls running this so well, just a couple of practices to execute it, some teams it takes all preseason.”
Bandera planned for the Billies inside game
“Defensively, we didn't do much except crowd the paint a bit to make the passes to their inside game a little tougher,” Botos said. “The girls played great defense with their hands up, but a few missed block outs here and there hurt us.”
Botos also
strategized her
line-ups and rotations
“We had a different starting five tonight as well, starting three guards which included sophomore Sydney Graves,” Botos said. “Graves has really stepped up her game during district play, against the Billies she drove and got fouls on their guards and some of their post and she had a career high of 17 points. I am also impressed with our bench. They were talking and cheering, staying enthusiastic through the whole game. That goes to show we are a team.”
Bandera focused on the positive of the game
“Though we came up short, it didn't seem like a huge loss because of all the great things we did, but we can't score only five points in the fourth and expect to win a district game, especially in this district and away,” Botos said.
Stat leaders for Bandera were Bauml, A - 15 points, two assists, three off and three def rebounds, five steals; Schmidt, K - eight points, two assists, two off and two def rebounds, three steals; Graves, S - 17 points, two off and three def rebounds, two fouls, one block, four steals; Antonino, M - one point, one assist, three off and one def rebounds, one block, one steal; Henderson, A - two points, two off and five def rebounds, one block, one steal; Owens, M - four points, one assists, three off and five def and one steal.
The LadyBulldogs were off on Tuesday and come back this Friday with a big home game against Canyon Lake. Freshmen and JV play at 5:30 pm, Varsity tips off at 7 pm.
“It’s going to be a special night and we would love to pack the gym!” Botos said.
