LadyBulldog Soccer kicks off season with big wins

LadyBulldog Soccer kicked off their season with a big win over TMI and an impressive showing in the Pleasanton Battle of the Brush tournament.

Bandera LadyBulldog Soccer kicked off their 2017 season with a big 5-4 win over San Antonio’s TMI on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
“It was an exciting back and forth game,” Head Girls Soccer Coach Myles Salas said.
After taking a 2-0 lead, the ‘Dogs gave up two goals late in the first half, with just seconds left.
TMI then scored a third early in the second half to take a 3-2 lead. The ‘Dogs fought back and scored two more of their own and conceded one more for a final score of 5-4.
Scoring for the LadyDogs were Penelope Garcia with two goals, Madeline Cardinal with two goals and Deja Gamez with one goal.
“The girls put in a good performance against TMI in their last scrimmage before they opened up regular season against Floresville,” Salas said.
Bandera traveled to the Eagles Sports Complex for the Pleasanton Battle of the Brush tournament this past weekend.
The LadyDogs took on the Floresville Tigers in their first game of the tournament and their first game of regular season.
Bandera played hard throughout the game and battled through the elements taking a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal by Penelope Garcia.
“Our girls defended well the entire game but conceded a penalty late in the second half that allowed Floresville a shot,” Salas said.
The Tigers were successful with their penalty shot, tying up the game 1-1.
The game ended tied up 1-1 and the two teams went to a shootout.
Bandera scored on two of their shots made by Penelope Garcia and Deja Gamez, Goalie Mattie Morrison saved one, but the LadyDogs fell short in penalty shots 3-2.
In their second game of the tourney, the LadyBulldogs took on El Paso Riverside.
“It was an encouraging display from the girls as they worked hard the full eighty minutes of the game,” Salas said.
Bandera went ahead midway through the first half with a goal from Deja Gamez, assisted by Penelope Garcia.
Early in the second half, the ‘Dogs doubled their lead when Garcia earned a spot on the score sheet from an assist by Jordan Edwards.
Late in the second half, El Paso answered back.
“With strong defending from Monica Mata and Raylynn Bowe we were able to hold El Paso to one goal,” Salas said.
The LadyDogs came out victorious 2-1.
In their final game of the tournament, battled against the Cole Cougars, ending the first half tied 0-0.
In the second half, Bandera gave up three goals late on the clock, ending the game with Cole up 3-0.
This Monday, the LadyBulldogs hosted the Pleasanton Eagles in a hard fought defeat of 0-4.
“They are a tough opponent,” Salas said. “We put up a strong fight, but gave up an unluck goal late in the first half and were not able to overcome that first goal.”
The LadyBulldogs will travel to Fredericksburg this Friday, to compete in the Fredericksburg Billie tournament. Their next home game is Friday, Jan. 20, when the LadyBulldogs host Cole High School at Bulldog Stadium with a 5 pm kickoff.
