LadyBulldog CC pick up another championship

By Steve Golemon Special to the Courier

On Saturday, September 17, Bandera LadyBulldog Varsity, which is 5th ranked in Class 4A, ran in the Class 4A/3A Division of the 2016 Texas A&M Corpus Christi University Islander Splash Cross Country Invitational. Although only junior Alia Henderson earned an individual medal, the LadyBulldogs ran extremely well as a team defeating a field of 27 teams and returned to Bandera as the Class 4A/3A Division girls team champion of the Islander Splash for the second year in a row.
Actually, this marked the third year in a row that the LadyBulldogs have captured a mid-season championship at a major invitational cross country meet, starting with the Class 1A-4A Girls Division Championship at the final U.T.S.A. Ricardo Romo Cross Country Invitational in 2014, followed by the Class 4A/3A Girls Division Championship in 2015 and 2016.
The third team championship in four 2016 cross country invitational meets was the result of an excellent team effort, as 5 LadyBulldogs placed in the top 22 places of 247 runners, while amassing a team total of 66 points, compared to 98 points for La Feria and 101 point for Antonian.
Junior Alia Henderson (6th at 13:02.3), sophomore Ashlyn Persyn (12th at 13:17.6), junior Sandy Clarkin (15th at 13:23.7), freshman Caitlin Thrasher ((19th at 13:24.5), and senior Kaitlyn Rodriguez (22nd at 13:33.1), all contributed to the LadyBulldogs point total.
Other Bandera Lady Bulldogs running with the Varsity at the Islander Splash were sophomore Salma Gutierrez (54th at 14:30), freshman Penelope Garcia (64th at 14:44.0), junior Madison Brzezinski(102nd at 15:33.8), and freshman Carson Brzezinski (160th at 16:44.0), who was running in her first varsity cross country meet ever.
The Class 4A/3A team standings and point totals were Bandera (1) with 66 points, La Feria (2) with 98 points, Antonian (3) with 101 points, Carrizo Springs (4) with 203 points, and Zapata (5) with 205 points.
Other than the exceptional team effort to win the 2016 Islander Splash, the team video interview of the LadyBulldogs by was the highlight of their trip to Corpus Christi.
The next meet for the Bandera Lady Bulldogs is the 2016 Fredericksburg Cross Country Invitational at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park on Saturday, September 24th.
Both Bandera High School and Bandera Middle School, which has performed extremely well in its first two meets of the 2016 season, will competed in the Fredericksburg Cross Country Invitational.
It is a relatively short trip to Fredericksburg, so this might be a good time for the citizens Bandera to see how well the Lady Bulldogs, who are 5th ranked Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas, run in relation to the 9th ranked Fredericksburg Lady Billies.
