Bandera LadyBulldog's returning state powerlifting qualifiers from last season include Allie Denham, Baileigh Toenes, MacKenzie Owens; sitting, Bethany Martinez and Andrea Felice.

Senior Bethany Martinez overcame adversity in the squat competition at the Texas Strength Systems Powerlifting Meet, battling back to win the gold medal in her division with a regional qualifying weight standard total of 775, this past Thursday.
Martinez had come 15 pounds shy of qualifying for Regionals the week before, when she took second place in her division at the Pearsall Maverick Powerlifting Meet, which served as the first meet of the season for the LadyBulldog powerlifters.
Martinez had 300 pounds in the squat, 165 pounds in the bench press, and 310 pounds in the deadlift, for a weight total of 775 pounds and a ticket to the Regional meet in March.
The LadyBulldog Powerlifting Team, which had only six entries, finished eighth out of eighteen teams in a meet where most of the schools that were in attendance had a full team of 11 entered.
"Although they did not medal, the other five LadyBulldog lifters performed extremely well, with sophomore Allie Elkins, junior Roxanne Gembler and sophomore Deja Morrow all bettering their weight total from their first powerlifting meet," Girls Powerlifting Coach Steve Golemon said. "Attending their first powerlifting meet were freshman KK Adams and senior Kortney Slagle, who both competed very well."
The final individual results showed that Morrow scored team points by placing fifth in her division, while Gembler just missed scoring points by finishing sixth in her division.
The LadyBulldogs will travel to Somerset on Saturday, Feb. 6, to compete in another regional qualifying meet.
