Bulldogs ground Owls, get bit by Hounds

After beating the Hondo Owls on Tuesday, Bandera Bulldog basketball traveled to Boerne Friday night with their 2-0 district record to face the Greyhounds, who were also 2-0 in district. When the final buzzer sounded, the Dogs were down by 20, 27-47.
In the first quarter, the Bulldogs trailed 7-12. Senior JT Milner, sophomore Alex Cardenas and senior Nick Salas each scored a bucket. Sophomore Josh Ripple sank one of two free throws.
In the second quarter, the Bulldog's offense was non-existent, not scoring in the quarter while giving up seven. Boerne took a 19-7 lead ito the locker room at the half.
Bandera came out stronger on offense the second half, scoring another seven points in the third quarter. The Greyhounds answered back with 15.
Dylan Bess dropped four points, Ripple scored two, and Milner hit one of two free throws.
Down 35-14 going into the fourth quarter, the 'Dogs had a long road to travel.
Landry Kinsel hit a couple of 3's in the fourth quarter, Milner made a bucket and a free throw, and Cardenas and Bess each scored a bucket.
While the Bulldogs scored 13 in the quarter, they gave up 12, with a final score of 27-47.
This loss brings the Bulldogs to a 2-1 record with plenty of District play left.
Before battling the Greyhounds, the Bulldogs celebrated a big win over Hondo.
"Once again, we came out slowly only scoring two points in the first quarter," Head Coach Bob Shearhart said. "Fortunately, Hondo only managed eight points of their own."
Cardenas sank a couple of free throws, for the only score for the 'Dogs in the first.
The second quarter saw the Dogs come to life, outscoring the Owls 15-7 and taking a two point lead into the dressing room at the half.
Salas and Tryston Butler each scored five points, Jeremiah Silone scored three, and Bess made a bucket in the quarter.
In the third quarter Bandera increased their lead to eight. Salas scored five more points, Ethan George dropped two buckets for four, and Cardenas made two free throws.
The fourth quarter was a tight one, but in the end, Bandera held on to win their second district game. Salas added six more points to his game high 16, and Cardenas sank five of six key free throws to seal the victory.
JV v Hondo
The JV Bulldogs came away victorious against the Hondo Owls. After a slow start in the first, Bandera slowly pulled away from the opposition throughout the rest of the game.
At the end of the first the Bulldogs found themselves up by three points (6-3).
In the second quarter, Bandera put up 10 points and allowed the Owls to score nine. This brought the halftime score to 16-12.
Both teams came out strong in the second half scoring 17 points apiece. Bandera outscored Hondo in the fourth quarter by ten points to bring home the win, 50-36.
Leading scorers for the Bulldogs were Brandon Chamberlain with 18, Aaron Givens with 14, and Andrew Garza with 9.
Freshmen
The Freshmen Bulldogs suffered a close 43-47 loss to the Owls. The Bulldogs came out strong taking a 10 to 5 lead in the first quarter.
With help from Mason Bankston, the Bulldogs went into half with the score 24 to 14.
With the score of 35 to 23 going into the fourth quarter, the Owls began to fight back. The Owls hit 10 free throws along with another 14 points to pull them ahead in the last seconds of the game. The Bulldogs had an opportunity to regain the lead with 3.8 seconds but the attempt fell short, ending the game with the Owls on top 47-43.
Both Mason Bankston and Braden Wheeler had 10 points, Justin Raitz had eight points, Jerry Alcorta had six, Zane Neff had five, Travis Adams and Wade Brosz had two points each.
Bandera traveled to Fredericksburg on Tuesday, and will host the Devine Warhorses this Friday night with a 5 pm tipoff.
