The Bandera Bulldog Varsity Basketball team won their District opener last Friday night after defeating the Lytle Pirates 40-32.
"The first quarter was lackluster to say the least," Head Coach Bob Shearhart said. "Each team could only muster a single basket."
Alex Cardenas scored the lone Bandera basket.
The second quarter picked up a bit with Nick Salas hitting a couple of 3's and making a 2 pointer. Ethan George made a bucket to give the Dogs a one point half time lead.
The third quarter opened up a little more with four Bulldogs scoring. JT Milner scored 5 points, Salas hit another 3 and sank a free throw, Cardenas hit a 3, and George scored another bucket. This allowed the Dogs to take a 6 point lead into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Cardenas scored 6 more points, Salas added 5 more to his game high 17, George hit a couple of big free throws, and Milner sank a free throw. The Bulldogs, now 1-0 in District, will host the Hondo Owls on Tuesday.
JV OT loss
The JV Bulldogs suffered a loss in a close game against the Pirates in their first district game of the year.
"After having a big first and second quarter to start the game, we beat ourselves with turnovers and lack of defense," Coach Tyler Wanek said.
At the end of the first quarter, Bandera found themselves up 11 and eventually extended their lead to 21 at halftime.
The Bulldogs went cold in the third quarter only scoring 5 points and giving up 13.
Lytle then put up a huge fourth quarter scoring 22 and only allowing Bandera to score 9.
This brought the game to a tie at the end of regulation and with the momentum in their favor, the Pirates were able to prevail over the Bulldogs.
Leading scorers for Bandera were Ben Shackelford with 15, Brandon Chamberlain with 12, and Aaron givens with 10.
Freshmen win
The Freshmen Bulldogs celebrated a victory over Lytle after a back and forth battle against the Pirates.
"The Pirates came out ready to play while we came out flat footed," Coach Scott Edwards said.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was 7 to 12. The Bulldogs switched from a zone defense to man and began to climb ahead of the Pirates.
"Great defense by Travis Adams and Jerry Alcorta gave us the lead going into half time," Edwards said.
With the score being 20-19 coming out of the half, the Pirates began to attack and regained the lead by the end of the third quarter 26-28.
"With a great offensive performance by Zane Neff in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs were able to finally pull away and come out on top," Edwards said.
The final score was 45 to 38 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Leading the Bulldogs were Justin Raitz with 18 points, Neff with 13 Points, Jerry Alcorta with 8 points, Travis Adams with 3 points, Mason Bankston with 2 points and Braden Wheeler with 1 point.
The Bulldogs are now 1-0 in district play and 7-6 overall.
The Bulldogs take on the Boerne Greyhounds at home this Friday starting at 5pm. Coaches ask for fans to "please come out and support Bandera High School Basketball."
