The LadyBulldogs opened 29-AAAA District play with a big 50-46 win over rivals Fredericksburg Billies in Bulldogs Gymnasium this past Friday night.
"We know we are in a tough district, but we are just as tough as any of the other teams in our district," Head Girls Casey Botos said. "I am really proud of the team and how well they came out mentally prepared to take on Fredericksburg."
Bandera trailed by just one point (13-14) at the end of the first quarter and took the lead (27-24) at halftime.
"It was great to see the girls play for each other, with a lot of heart and full of emotions," Botos said. "Our gym was full of excitement and the positive atmosphere from the bench to the crowd in the stands helped us catch fire."
That fire fueled the LadyBulldogs to 40-33 lead by the end of the third quarter and took Bandera to a 50-46 win at the buzzer.
"There was never a doubt that we were going to win tonight's game and that's what we did," Botos said. "These young ladies beat Fredericksburg starting off district 1-0 and it's a pretty awesome feeling."
Junior Kaitlyn Rodriguez led the LadyBulldogs with 16 points and 3 assists, joined by junior Alex Bauml with 12 points, 5 assists and 6 steals.
Keileigh Schmidt contributed 8 points and 4 assists, and Katie Beauchamp scored 8 points and had 9 rebounds.
Carra Gillaspy, Kaylee Hornung and MacKenzie Owens all scored 2 points for the LadyBulldogs.
"We can't be satisfied with just one win...we need to carry this feeling over into the rest of district play," Botos said. "We have to continue to play with the heart, the emotions and the positive, 'will to win' attitude for us to be successful."
The LadyBulldogs played Devine on Tuesday, and will host the Lytle Pirates this Friday in Bandera.
Playing earlier in the night, the Freshmen and Junior Varsity did not fare as well as the Varsity LadyBulldogs, both suffering losses in their District opener.
"We went down fighting," Freshman Coach Ginger Postert said. "We played with a lot of heart, just had a bad quarter. Other than that, we stayed right with them the whole way, even cutting into their lead in the fourth."
The Freshmen LadyBulldogs matched the Billies in every quarter except the third, where the Billies scored 10 to Bandera's 3. The final score was 26-30 in favor of the Billies.
Scoring for Bandera were Presli Mooney and Mattie Morrison with 9 points each, Cheyenne Dennis with 6, and Kaitlyn Garringer with 2 points.
The Billies took an early lead (3-10) in the first quarter against the JV LadyBulldogs and never looked back.
Fredericksburg led 20-10 at halftime, with the LadyBulldogs trailing 24-40 at the final buzzer.
On the boards for Bandera were Kendra Shaw with 7, Sydney Graves with 7, Alia Henderson with 6, Deja Morrow with 3, and Ashely Shaw with 1 point.
The LadyBulldogs take on the Lytle Pirates this Friday night at Bulldog Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 5pm.
