The Bandera Bulldog Cross Country team wrote another chapter in the history books this past Monday, at Texas A&M Corpus Christi where they annihilated their competition, taking the top two individual places and winning the team UIL Region IV Cross Country Championships.
Last week, the Bulldogs won the District 29-AAAA Championship, marking the first time for a Bandera boy's cross country team to win a team title at the district level.
The Bulldog regional champions scored 82 points, followed by Boerne with 96 points, LaVernia with 139 points, and Hidalgo with 150 points. These top four teams will represent Region IV at the UIL State Cross Country Championships.
Running on a treacherous course filled with rain, mud and turns, seniors Jarred Elizondo and Seva Nix didn't disappoint fans, battling it out between each other for the top two spots in the region, out of 186 runners. Although neither ran their shared PR of 15:37 (District meet), Elizondo and Nix's combined score of three sealed their team championship.
"All the hard work all year has set us up to finish as the top two," Elizondo said. "Coach Tierney is the best, he always has a plan and we could not do any of this without him."
Elizondo earned his tenth gold medal for the season, crossing the finish line first with a time of 16:39. Nix, who earned gold at the district meet, grabbed the silver at regionals with a time of 16:53.
Working together to earn another historic team championship were senior Ben Lopez, who placed twelfth with a time of 17:44, followed by junior Jose Gonzalez (30) with 18:19, sophomore Casey Harp (51) with 18:45, sophomore Michael Gonzalez (55) with 18:49, and junior Aiden Keane (97) with 19:27.
The Bulldogs will hear their last starting pistol go off at 10:10am, on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, as they compete for the UIL Boys 4A State Cross Country Champion-ships.
