Bobcats open district play at home

By Tim McGrath BCC Sports Writer

The Medina Bobcats begin a whole new season this Friday, Oct. 23, when they play host to the high-powered Rochelle Hornets in the District 12-1A-1 6-man football opener to be played at Bobcat Stadium in Medina. Kickoff will be at 7:30 pm.
Medina Head Coach Mark Coley and his young Bobcats, coming off an open week of recuperating from a long non-district season, will undoubtedly have their hands full containing the Hornets explosive offense led by quarterback Marty Flores, this years pre-season 12-1A-1 offensive MVP. Last season, Flores rushed 195 times for 2,258 yards and 41 TDs while passing for an additional 1,222 yards and 18 TDs. Flores was honored with the Region MVP Award while also garnishing First Team All-State honors for his outstanding performance in 2014.
Tight end Jacob Cox and center David Cook are also players to watch for Rochelle. The Hornets finished 3-0 in district play and went on to the playoffs in 2014.
With only four teams in District 12-1A-1, the Bobcats will have two remaining district games following the Rochelle encounter. On Friday, Oct. 30, the Cats will travel to Eden to take on the Bulldogs in week two district action before returning home for the district finale against the Paint Rock Indians on Friday, Nov. 6, at Bobcat Stadium.
At the conclusion of the 12-1A-1 season, the top two teams in the district will go on to the playoffs. The Bobcats will make their bid for a playoff spot with freshman quarterback JR Gonzalez at the controls while seniors Jason Ross, Colton Arnold, Brae Sanders, Baley Wickham and Nate Armstrong provide the leadership for the hopeful Bobcats.
