Bulldog seniors Jarred Elizondo and Seva Nix have proven again that they are a force to be reckoned with in the running world, celebrating another first and second sweep (respectively) at the prestigious University of Incarnate Word Boys Gold 5K race.
Running against a majority of 6A schools and 132 of Texas' top male runners, Elizondo won gold with a PR of 15:40, and a 5:03 per mile pace; and Nix earned silver with a PR of 15:48, and a 5:05 per mile pace.
Elizondo finished 20 seconds ahead of third place. Both Elizondo and Nix knocked six-seconds off of their PR times last week, which adds even more excitement to the preparation for the approaching District 29 4A meet to be held on Monday.
"I'm feeling great!" NIx said. "We'll start getting some speed work in and cut down some mileage soon."
Besides a gold and silver sweep, the Bulldogs had even more to celebrate, placing third as a team with 103 points behind first place San Antonio Johnson (88 points) and second place San Antonio Cole (96 points). Bandera beat many SA powerhouse teams including Judson, Brennan, Clark and Boerne Champion.
"The team is looking strong," Nix said. "We have guys from JV to the top seven who have pushed themselves and the team the whole year. We're ready to see that work ethic pay off soon."
Senior Ben Lopez has consistently been the third Bulldog across the finish line, helping the Bulldogs win as a team while picking up individual medals. Lopez placed eleventh on Saturday, with a time of 16:32.
Following Lopez and adding to team points were junior Jose Gonzalez (36) with 17:18, sophomore Casey Harp (53) with 17:44, sophomore Michael Gonzalez (54) with 17:49, junior Aidan Keane (79) with 18:34, senior Brendan Keane (118) with 19:41, and junior Tanner Gibson (119) with 19:42.
Bandera will spend the week preparing for District 29-AAAA Cross Country Championships to be held at Hondo Municipal Golf Course this Monday, Oct. 19.
