Dogs begin round two in District play

By Brandon Jennings

In District play, the Bandera High School Bulldog hoopsters remain in a tight race as they head toward playoffs.

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Dogs began their second round against the Mavericks in Pearsall. After defeating the Mavs with ease, they took on the challenge of beating Devine at home.

As a cold front blew it, the Dogs traveled to Pearsall, but the frigid weather failed to affect them. The boys in blue and white stormed out of the locker room on fire and knocked down almost every shot attempted.

They repeatedly ran past the Mavs, maintaining a slight lead during the entire game. As the final buzzer sounded, the Dogs were up 59-50.

Scoring for Bandera was Derek Draper with 25 points; Cole Hicks, 12; Brandon Jennings, nine; Zach Young, eight; Sean Scott, three; and James Stendenbach, two points.

After besting the Warhorses twice already, the Dogs anticipated blowing Devine away for a third time on Friday, Jan. 30.
However, the game remained close the entire time and, in the end, the Warhorses left the Dogs in their dust by a score of 67-54.

Scoring for Bandera was Jennings with 14 points; Draper and Scott, 11 each; Hicks, seven; Young, six; and Brice Shearhart with five points.

Now 4-4 in District play, the Dogs travel to Hondo Friday, Feb. 6, and return home Tuesday, Feb. 10, to take on the Lytle Pirates.

Junior varsity tip-off is at 5 pm; 6:15 pm for BHS Varsity Girls’ Basketball; and 7:30 pm for varsity boys.

Everyone is invited to support the Bulldogs as they make their way to playoffs.
