LadyBulldogs keep fans on feet in OT with Hondo

Bandera fans had plenty to cheer about after traveling to Hondo this past Tuesday night for the 29-4A district match-up of the LadyBulldogs and Hondo Owls. Bandera, who had lost by a significant amount in previous non-district play against the Owls, was prepared for battle, knowing that a win over Hondo would secure a playoff berth.
The top four teams from the district will qualify for State playoffs.
"After beating Lytle, we knew we needed to take care of business in Hondo," senior Kate Martin said.
Bandera came out fighting, taking an early lead and finishing the first quarter ahead 14-8. Hondo fought back and narrowed the margin with Bandera still up at half-time 28-27.
The Owls pulled ahead in the third quarter 45 to Bandera's 41, with a back and forth battle. The LadyBulldogs answered back, outscoring the Owls 15-11 in the fourth quarter and sending the game into overtime.
In the final seconds of the fourth quarter, Andrea Felice drove down court and banked a three-pointer, bring the score to 54-55 with the LadyDogs trailing by one. A controversial call sent the Owls to the line where they picked up anther point (54-56).
With seconds left on the clock, intense perimeter defense by Kate Martin, Alex Bauml and Kaitlyn Rodriguez forced a turnover by the Owls, sending Bandera to their hoop.
The clock ticked down to 7.7 seconds when Katie Beauchamp drove to the boards, sinking a bank shot and bringing the score to 56 all.
In overtime, a controversial reverse call on a textbook charge earned by defender McKenzie Owens, sent Hondo to the line where they picked up 2 free throws and took the lead 58-56. Martin answered back with a nothing but net 3 pointer, giving the LadyBulldogs a 59-58 lead.
Another foul called on the LadyDogs helped Hondo tie it up. Beauchamp battled to the boards, sinking a shot and giving Bandera the lead (61-59).
Numerous fouls called on Bandera sent Hondo to the line and to a five point lead. Bandera struggled at the free throw line, scoring only one out of six allotted and found themselves behind 62-67 at the final buzzer.
Rodriquez and Bauml led the LadyDogs on the boards with 13 points each, followed by Beauchamp with 11, Felice with 8, Kaylee Hornung with 7, Owens and Martin with 4 each, Jeneive Casarez with 2.
The LadyBulldog Junior Varsity celebrated a 37-27 win over the Owls. Carra Gillaspy led the LadyDogs scoring 18, followed by Candice Rollo with 9.
Bandera's Freshmen fell 16-32 to the Owls, with LadyBulldog Kendra Shaw leading on the boards.
The match-up with Hondo ended the first round of district play for the LadyBulldogs. Bandera hosted Fredericksburg Tuesday night and will travel to Devine High School this Friday.
