By Sandy Jennings BCC Contributor

Bulldog basketball traveled to Lytle last Friday to take on the Pirates in their District 29-4A season opener. Bandera Varsity beat Lytle 55-42, making them 1-0 in district.
"It was not a pretty game to watch, it was however a victory," Head Basketball Coach Bob Shearhart said.
Lytle started off quickly matching Bandera's 18 points at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter both Ty Neff and Noah Nelson scored 6 each and Ruben Vargas scored 3, as the Bulldogs outscored the Pirates 15-5 to take a 31-23 halftime lead.
Again in the third quarter the Dogs outscored the Pirates to extend their lead and going into the final 8 minutes of play, the Dogs were up 41-28.
The fourth quarter was a standoff, with each team scoring 14 points. Neff brought his game high total up to 29 by adding another 6 points. Nelson added 4 more to bring his total to 19. Also scoring for the 'Dogs were Corey Jennings and Allan Clark with 2 each.
Defensively, early foul trouble plagued Jennings who was forced to sit out half the game and fellow post player Averie Mansfield was out-of-town on a college visit.
"Foul trouble and a lack of rebounding plagued us most of the night," Shearhart said.
JV report
The Junior Varsity found themselves in a very low scoring game throughout the first half with the Pirates.
At the end of the first quarter the score was 7-7 and by the time the first half ended the Bulldogs found themselves down by 4 (13-17).
Bandera managed to climb back and give themselves a chance to get the "W" by tying the game at 25 all at the end of the third.
"Again, a lack of defense and rebounding along with costly turnovers allowed the Pirates to stay in the game and ultimately come away with the win," JV Coach Tyler Wanek said.
The Bulldogs found themselves down by three at the buzzer, ending the game 37-40.
"Playing the game as a 'team' is what we really need to focus on in the upcoming games," Wanek said.
Leading scorers for the Bulldogs were Tryston Butler with 9, Dylan Bess with 6, Jeremiah Silone and Ethan George with 4 each.
Bandera took on Hondo Tuesday night and will match up with the Boerne Greyhounds at Boerne this Friday night.
