In his first season back in the Bulldog football program since 2011, Bankston has shined on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. At cornerback, Bankston has developed into a lockdown cover corner that the Bulldogs can rely on throughout the season.
Bankston's play in the Bulldogs win over Comfort last week was key when the Bobcat's reverted to the spread attack towards the end of the game. In addition to breaking up a pass on fourth down to halt a possible game tying drive, Bankston allowed only one completed pass to his receiver throughout the game.
"It felt great to make a key play in a big situation on Friday night," Bankston said. "I was just trying to do whatever I could to help my team win, and we knew that forcing them to turn the ball over sealed the win for us."
Kyle Bauml - CB, Senior
Bauml is in his third season on the varsity level as both a corner and inside receiver for the Bulldogs, and has also shined on both sides of the ball. Bringing a lot of physicality in the Bulldogs new 10-1 defense, Bauml disrupts receiver's routes at the line of scrimmage and throws off the timing of the quarterback.
"It's really important to slow down the receivers as much as we can at the line," Bauml said. "If we let them get off with a free release, it's a lot harder to cover them down the field."
Bauml has played strong throughout the first four games for Bandera, picking up key pass breakups in each game. With Bankston and Bauml teaming up on the outsides of the defense, the Bulldogs have thrived at slowing down the speed of Sam Houston, as well as the offenses of Ingram and Comfort.
"We've had some good tests early in the season," Bauml said. "But we know we have to get better to continue our success against teams like Boerne in the district season."
