The Medina Bobcats begin a new era in 6-man football on Friday, August 29, when they play host to the New Braunfels Christian Academy Wildcats in the 2014 season opener with kickoff set for 7:30 pm at Bobcat Stadium in Medina.
The Bobcats finished off their "scrimmage" season on Friday, August 22, when they participated in a four team practice session at Our Lady of the Hills in Kerrville. Temple Central Catholic and San Antonio Feast also participated in the summer's final scrimmage.
The Bobcats outscored Temple Central Catholic three touchdowns to one and later were nipped by Our Lady of the Hills 2-1. The Feast JV team played to a 0-0 tie against Medina's second team.
Bobcat Head Coach Mark Coley praised the team's effort and spoke of the overall experience of the 6-man game. "I think it was an eye-opener for some of us to see how versatile 6-man teams can be. The team is playing hard and I think they are having fun. As long as we don't revert back to 11-man thinking, we should be OK," Coley smiled.
The Bobcats projected starting lineup for the season opener against New Braunfels Christian Academy include senior Ben Dabney, in his first year as quarterback, along with senior wide receivers Logan LeStourgeon and Jacob Lindstrom. Senior Ryan Little will start at fullback with junior Jason Ross filling the running back position. Junior Angel Torres will handle the chores of the center in the 6-man offensive set.
On defense, the Cats will line up with Ross and junior Brae Sanders at the defensive end positions, Little at linebacker, junior Colton Arnold and LeStourgeon at the corners and Lindstrom at free safety.
Next week, the Bobcats will be at home again on Friday, Sept. 5 when they host San Antonio Atonement Academy in a matchup starting at 7:30 pm.
