Both Bandera's Varsity and Junior Varsity teams won the team championships in the girls' division this past Saturday, at the Caverns of Sonora Trail Run Invitational Cross Country Meet. This was their first meet of the 2014 season.
"In the varsity division, seven of the eight LadyBulldog entries finished in the top half of the field of runners, with the eighth LadyBulldog being merely one place away from finishing in the top half," Head Girls' Cross Country Coach Steve Golemon said.
Five of the eight Varsity members medaled, with a battle at the finish line between Bandera's junior Mercy Yermo (1st) and senior Karla Presa (2nd). Other medalists included junior Brenda Gutierrez (4th), sophomore Taelen Butler (8th), and senior Sarah Butler (9th). Contributing to team points were junior Allie Denham, sophomore Monica Mata, and sophomore Kaitlyn Rodriguez.
It was a clean sweep in the Junior Varsity division with the LadyBulldogs capturing the first three places. Freshman Madison Brzezinski finished first, followed by freshman Abbey MacMillan placing second and junior Jessie McLeod finishing third. Other LadyBulldogs receiving a medal were freshman Raylynn Bowen (6th), and Emily Dibrell (9th). Junior Priscilla Leutzinger finished eleventh, just one place away from capturing a medal. Also contributing to the team win were junior Paige Barrington, junior Bethany Martinez, and sophomore McKenzie Owens.
Bandera will travel to Uvalde this Saturday for the annual Uvalde Invitational Cross Country meet with Varsity running at 9 am and Junior Varsity at 10 am.
"Since the meet will be much closer this week, the Lady Bulldogs would love to see you in Uvalde on Saturday, offering them words of encouragement over the course of the race," Golemon said. "The cross country course is at the soccer field behind the Uvalde High School, and is very spectator friendly. Hope to see you there."
