Bulldogs help lead Rampage to tie

By Brady Keane BCC Contributor

The Kerrville Rampage U16 soccer team, represented by Bandera players Aidan Keane, Brendan Keane, Cole Schroeder, Casey Baker, Jose Reyna, Ben Lopez, and Nick Aguirre, held its first scrimmage of the 2014 season last Sunday against the powerhouse FC Thunder squad from Boerne. Despite the Thunder being heavily favored in the game, the Bulldog players helped lead the Rampage to a tie in an intense and well played 1-1 game.
"It felt good knowing we were able to come together as a team and play well against a very good squad," goalie Aidan Keane said. "We didn't get flustered by who we were playing."
The Rampage took the lead early on a goal that came off of an assist from Lopez in the tenth minute of the game. To counter the quickness and speed of the Thunder, Schroeder and Aguirre used a high level of physicality and tough defense to help to take some of the pressure off of Aidan Keane in the goal. However, the Thunder were able to get an equalizing goal off of a breakaway attempt near halftime.
Despite the equalizer, the Rampage offense, led by Baker, Lopez, Brendan Keane, and Jose Reyna, were able to get several shots on the goal later in the match. However, the Thunder defense held strong enough to keep the game locked at 1-1 through the remaining 80 minutes of play.
With seven Bulldog players practicing together on the summer/fall team, the Bandera soccer program is certainly going to have a core group of seasoned and talented leaders ready for the spring season. The Rampage have been practicing together as a squad since the beginning of the summer, and will continue to work towards the fall season in the coming weeks. The team's next game has yet to be announced.
"Playing in the off season will improve the overall cohesion and chemistry of this year's team because of the extra playing time we are getting together on the Rampage," Schroeder said.
