3 qualify for AAU Junior Olympic Games Nationals

By Sandy Jennings BCC Contributor

This past week the Region 19 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Regional Qualifier Track and Field Meet was held at DW Rutledge Stadium in Converse, with three Bandera County athletes taking home top honors and qualifying for the AAU Junior Olympic Games National Championship at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, July 26-August 2.
The regional meet included all athletes from the central and south Texas area, ages 8 through 18. There are no class divisions, Class A-AAAAAA all compete together. The only division in AAU is by age brackets. Athletes placing in the top five in field events and the top eight in running events advance to Nationals.
A recent graduate from Medina High School, Weston Jenkins, will be competing at Nationals for the second time in his AAU career. Jenkins, who plans to try to walk on to the Texas State track team this fall, took home a gold in the 110M Hurdles with a time of 15.3 seconds, and a silver in the 400M Hurdles (a collegiate event) with a time of 57.4 seconds in the 17-18 year old division. Jenkins competed in the 110M and 300M hurdles at the UIL State Meet in May. He is a member of the San Antonio Roadrunners Track Club.
From Bandera High School, Corey Jennings, an incoming senior, took home the gold in both the shot put and discus events in the 17-18 year old division. Jennings placed in both events at the UIL Sate Track meet in May and in June was chosen for the San Antonio Express News All-Area Team in discus; an honor that extends through central and south Texas. Jennings, who hopes to earn a track scholarship, is competing in AAU as an individual to further his training in preparation for the 2015 track season.
From Medina High School, junior Cortlyn Barnes is making her national competition debut after qualifying for the UIL Regional Meet this past May in multiple events. Barnes took home the gold at the AAU Region 19 meet in the 4X100M Relay with a time of 48.79. Barnes will be traveling to Iowa with her fellow teammates on the San Antonio Roadrunners Track Club team. Barnes also placed 16th in the 100M dash and 27th in the 200M dash.
Bandera's three student-athletes will leave for AAU Junior Olympic Games National Championships on July 26. For more information about the meet and for live coverage of the events please visit the AAU website www.aauathletics.org.
