The desolate summer school-grounds have come alive with the sound of bouncing volleyballs and cheers of encouragement as the Varsity and Junior Varsity players prepare for the 2014 Volleyball season.
The girls, who play every Monday night at Cornerstone Christina Academy, are coached by Dr. Allan Gratia and Tandie Mansfield.
"It's a very informal league," Gratia said. "It creates opportunity for the girls to get together and get touches on the ball."
Gratia also coaches several of the Bandera girls on his select team known as the Vipers.
"The select season runs December through May," Gratia said. "Summer leagues are
created to keep the girls playing and to introduce some of the younger players entering high school."
Rio Orion is one of those players. Orion, a standout in volleyball, basketball and track, plays on booth the select team and summer league team. In fact, if you venture onto the high school grounds on any given weekend, you will find Orion on the track, executing one of her tough daily workouts.
"Success isn't given, its earned on the track, on the field or in the gym, with occasional blood, sweat, and tears," Orion said. "Besides improving skills, the extra practices help me get to know the other girls, so I'm not scared or uncomfortable when we start working together in the fall."
The fall season can't start quickly enough for sophomore and varsity veteran Morgan Gross, who feels strongly that this year's team will be heading to the playoffs.
"We have a great shot at playoffs," Gross said. "Wimberley moved to another district leaving Boerne and Fredericksburg as the teams to beat. Our back row will be stronger than ever with Bailey Toenes as libero and returners Kate Martin and Mary Hevenor. On the offensive side, setters Kaylie Mansfield and Dana Lohrke will keep us strong. We have a lot of new people and a new district--I'm really excited!"
The LadyBulldogs are currently undefeated and will play their final games on Thursday.
