Medina track heads to regional
By Lovey Sokol Head Track Coach
The Medina track team had a great showing at the Area track meet in Harper on Thursday April 10. It wasn't the best day for a meet but that didn't seem to bother any of the athletes. The team brought home one gold, six silver, and three bronze medals. Those medals are their rite of passage to the regional track meet to be held April 25-26 at Judson Stadium in Converse.
The gold medal went to senior Weston Jenkins in the 110 meter hurdles. His time of 14.74 seconds is his personal best and also a new school record. Jenkins also won a bronze in the 300 meter hurdles.
The 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore Whitley Whitewood, sophomore Cortlyn Barnes, sophomore Chellby Richter, and junior Lauren Ortiz also ran their best time this season and finished with a silver medal.
Ortiz also added to her medal collection a bronze in the 100 meter dash and a silver in the 200 meter dash.
Barnes earned her first solo trip to the regional meet after finishing with a bronze in the 200 meter dash and also ran her personal best time of 26.79.
Rounding out the list of regional qualifiers is junior Nikki Sandidge. Sandidge once again hurled the discus a personal best of 99' 8.5" and finished with a silver medal.
These young athletes have endured a season of freezing temperatures, rainy and windy days, and the Texas hot weather. The workouts can be tiresome and grueling but these young athletes have proven that hard work, dedication, and determination pays off.
They are one step closer to that stadium in Austin!
