The Lady Bulldogs softball team is entering 2014 fresh off a deep playoff run last season, and started off this season with two full weeks of scrimmages against some elite talent. Playing five games in a little more than a week, the ladies have set high expectations for themselves yet again this season.
"Our motto has always been 'R2S' (Road To State), so that's the ultimate goal," sophomore short stop and second basemen Katelyn Cornwell said. "We definitely want to make it back to playoffs this season."
The ladies kicked off the season with scrimmages against Clemens, Alamo Heights, Antonian, Wagner, and Seguin. Despite not keeping official stats or score in the games, head coach Priscilla Pompa named a Player of the Week for each of the last two weeks.
"Katelyn Cornwell was the Player of the Week in week 1 for leading the team in hits, steals, and runs scored," Pompa said. "Krystian Osbourn was the Player of the Week last week as she went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a solo home run."
Cornwell and Osbourn along with several other key returning players from last year's bi-district champions, including sophomores Kristen Grothues, Cheyanne Burns, and Britney Adams among others, will be the leaders of this season's team that is full of young talent.
The ladies began the regular season on Tuesday against Kerville Tivy in the annual cancer benefit 'Pink Out' game, and will travel to the Austin ISD tournament today. The Lady Bulldogs are looking to get off on a good start towards reaching the ultimate goal of making the 'R2S.'
