The Bandera Lady Bulldogs basketball team turned up the heat defensively last Friday night against the Canyon Lake Hawks on their way to a 34-26 victory. The ladies improved to (2-5) in district play with the win, and have two games remaining to jump into playoff positioning.
"It felt great to get back on track with a win," senior guard Taylor Schultz said. "We really needed it to get our confidence back up going into our game against Boerne."
The Lady Bulldogs win was largely due to an increased intensity on the defensive side of the ball. As a team, the ladies forced 24 steals. Junior guard Kate Martin led the way with six steals, while freshman guard Alex Bauml had five steals to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Junior Dana Lohrke led the way for the Lady Bulldogs interior defense, blocking three shots and grabbing eight rebounds to lead the team in both categories.
"Since defense is the most important part of the game, we worked really hard to force some turnovers that resulted in several steals and easy layups," Martin said. "Defense was definitely the difference in the game."
Defense really kept the Lady Bulldogs in the game, as the ladies struggled offensively in the early going. Bauml helped to spark the team offensively, scoring 14 points to lead all scorers. Martin added eight points and senior Casey Olsen had five points to round out the leading scorers for the Lady Bulldogs.
"We need to get our shooting percentage up," Bauml said. "It wasn't where we need it to be, but our defense stepped up to help us pull out the win."
The Lady Bulldogs are currently sitting in fifth place in the district race, one position away from qualifying for a playoff spot. The ladies hosted the Boerne Greyhounds on Tuesday, and will travel to Navarro tomorrow night before finishing out the season next Tuesday at home against the Fredericksburg Battlin' Billes.
