Lady Bulldogs pick up big win in Pleasanton tournament

The Lady Bulldogs soccer team traveled to the prestigious Pleasanton soccer tournament last weekend, and went 1-3 with a win over Weslaco East in the opening game. Despite not getting the winning results the team hoped for, the ladies were able to communicate well as a team and began to use the space given to them by opposing teams more effectively.
"We have room for improvement but I am very proud of the effort our team gave," Spiegelman said. "Playing bigger schools from bigger classifications will help us when district play starts."
The Lady Bulldogs opened the game with an offensive explosion against Weslaco East, scoring five goals in a 5-1 victory. Sophomore and leading scorer Annie Fritz led the way again with four goals, while sophomore Andrea Felice added the other goal for the ladies. Assists came from seniors Cheyanne Jenkins and Catlynn Biela, and senior Amber Delgado led the way defensively with 5 saves.
"We had great passing and communicated extremely well," Fritz said. "We were able to get several good shots on the goal."
The next three games for the Lady Bulldogs demonstrated offensive struggles, as the team was able to score a combined two goals in the three losses to Pleasanton (3-0), Leander (4-1), and SW Christian (5-1). Felice and Fritz added the two goals while sophomore Priscilla Leutzinger and Delgado combined for several saves.
"We just haven't been very consistent yet," Spiegelman said. "I think that will come with a little more experience."
The Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-4 in the regular season with the losses, and will have a few more games of non-district preparation before the big games get underway on February 1. The ladies will next travel to the Kerville Tivy tournament this Friday and Saturday.
"I have total confidence in this team and our ability to raise our level of play moving into the district season," Spiegelman said.
