The junior varsity girls basketball team continued the successes they have been having all season last Friday night against Wimberley, and picked up their first win in several years against the Texans. The Lady Bulldogs had to extinguish a late Texan comeback in the fourth quarter, and eventually pulled out a six point victory by a score of 42-36.
"The girls worked really hard and played together for the win," coach Ginger Postert said. "At the end, they dug in and played smart ball."
The Lady Bulldogs opened up the game slow, but exploded for an 18 point second quarter to help put distance between themselves and the Texans. The ladies also had a strong defensive quarter in the second and went into the half with a dominant lead.
The ladies began the second half with the tough nosed defense that has created turnovers against opposing teams all season, and Wimberley was unable to pull any closer in the third quarter. However, the Texan offense began to liven in the fourth quarter as Lady Bulldogs turnovers transitioned into baskets for Wimberley. As the game tightened, the ladies pulled together as a team and finished the game with smart passes to pull out another victory.
"It felt amazing to get a win against Wimberley," Junior Jeneive Casarez said. "We haven't beat them in a while, and it was a great win!"
Casarez led the way for the Lady Bulldogs for the second straight game by scoring 13 points. Sophomore Carra Gillaspy added nine points and junior Laurynn Winters had seven to round out the leading scorers for the Lady Bulldogs.
The win put the Lady Bulldogs at 1-0 in district, and gives the team momentum moving into the upcoming district matchups. The ladies took on Canyon Lake on Jan. 7, and will head to Boerne tomorrow night to take on the Greyhounds. Games begin at 5:30 for JV and freshmen, and 7 for varsity.
