The Lady Bulldogs volleyball team picked up their first district victory last Friday night against the Canyon Lake Hawks, playing hard from start to finish, pulling out the win in four sets. Bandera cut down on mistakes from previous games, and improved on both sides of the net to beat the Hawks.
"It felt great to finally have that feeling of a win again," senior setter Catrina Sampson said. "We haven't felt it since pre-district. But we have no plans of stopping there, and we are going to continue to improve and work hard."
Sampson played an outstanding game both offensively and defensively for the Lady Bulldogs, racking up five aces and 27 assists on offense, while contributing 16 digs for the Bandera defense. Senior Kelly Nelson also had a big game with 17 kills and 14 digs while senior Kelly Harris added three aces and three blocks, and Junior Dana Lohrke added seven kills and three blocks.
"The new rotation we implemented definitely helped," Nelson said. "We were just so ready to beat Canyon Lake that we just had fun with it and played hard."
The Lady Bulldogs jumped ahead of Canyon Lake in the first set, but fell behind and lost the second one. After some quick adjustments, Bandera bounced back to win two in a row and take the game in four sets.
"That win definitely gives momentum and more confidence moving forward for the rest of the season," Sampson said. "We really needed a win, and we came together as a team to get it."
The victory keeps the Lady Bulldogs' playoff hopes alive, although it will still take some work in the coming games. Bandera had their last home game this season on Tuesday against Navarro, and will head to Boerne tomorrow night to battle the Greyhounds. Games begin at 5.
