Hawks take 27-6 decision over Bulldogs

The visiting Canyon Lake Hawks put on an impressive defensive performance combined with a powerful offensive running attack to take a 27-6 decision over the home team Bandera Bulldogs in District 27AAA football action on Friday, Oct. 18 at Bulldog Stadium in Bandera.
The Hawks' defense stymied the Bulldog offensive effort while limiting the Dawgs to 123 yards of total offense that included 96 rushing and 27 yards passing for the game. While the Hawk defense continued their outstanding play, the Hawks' Slot-T offense ground out 365 yards rushing on 52 attempts and tossed in some timely scoring plays along the way as the team from Canyon Lake earned their first victory of the season. With the victory, the Hawks even their district record at 1-1(1-6 overall) while the Bulldogs fall to 0-2 in 27AAA play and 2-4 overall.
The Hawks broke open a tough defensive battle with a second period touchdown run and PAT in taking a 7-0 lead with 8:33 remaining in the half. Less than two minutes later, the Bulldogs struck back when junior running back Landon Ventura capped off a 55-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to bring the Dawgs to within one at 7-6 with 6:27 still left in the second period. The attempt for the PAT was blocked.
The score remained 7-6 until the Hawks tallied on a 22-yard touchdown run by McGuire Johnson. The Hawks tacked on the PAT to increase their lead to 14-6 with just 2:47 remaining in the first half. The score remained 14-6 until late in the third quarter when Johnson took it in from 15 yards out for a Hawk touchdown and 20-6 lead with 4:37 left in the period.
The Hawks continually turned back the Bulldogs' offensive efforts and added a fourth quarter score and PAT to finish the night on top, 27-6.
Ventura led Bulldog rushers with 67 yards on 14 carries while Alex Willoughby-Gonzales picked up 49 yards on 7 attempts for Bandera. Bulldog receivers included Caleb Beauchamp (1-15yds), Noah Nelson (1-8) and Ventura (1-4). Bulldog quarterback Joe Rodriguez completed 2 of 9 attempts for 12 yards while Jonathan Stoufflet completed 1 of 1 for 15 yards as the Hawks brought continuous pressure on the passer throughout the night.
On defense, the Bulldogs were led by junior linebacker Averie Mansfield who recorded 20 total tackles with 10 unassisted, linebacker Ishmael MacNeil (15-6), Kyle Bauml (13-7) and Brennan Aguirre (10-5). Others lending to the Bulldog defensive effort include Chance Lopez ( 8 tackles), Beauchamp (8), Bryce Dowda (7), Corey Jennings (7) and Ventura with 5. Ethan Greven (4), Logan Breen (4), Shane Reynolds (3), JT Milner (3), Stephan Young (3) and Kyle Wilson (3) also contributed to the Bulldog defensive effort against Canyon Lake.
Bandera Athletic Director and Head Football Coach David T. Sine remarked briefly on the Hawk setback while focusing on the upcoming game at Boerne, "Canyon Lake won the battle in the trenches and came out on top. Boerne and Bandera this week, with the winner still alive for a playoff spot."
With three games remaining on the district schedule, the Bulldogs will travel to Boerne this Friday, Oct. 25 to take on the (0-2 district) Greyhounds in a "must win" encounter to stay alive for a 2013 playoff berth. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm at Boerne.
