Sub-Varsity Bulldogs struggle with Bears
by Brady Keane BCC Sports
The La Vernia Bears proved to be a tough test on all levels for Bulldog Nation football last week.
Despite losses for the Bulldogs, several teams have shown tremendous improvement over the
past few weeks and give the Bulldog football program something to build off of going into district.
The junior varsity team continued to improve this week, breaking out with a few explosive plays
on offense. However, the team still struggled to punch the ball into the end zone after long, hard
fought drives and eventually fell by a score of 30-6.
Sophomore Tryston Butler was a playmaker on both sides of the ball, providing the only touchdown of the night on an 18-yard pass to sophomore Rueben Vargas.
On defense, Butler broke up several passes, grabbed an interception, and made a few touchdown saving tackles.
Sophomore Calvin Starnes was a workhorse in the backfield for Bandera, and led the Bulldogs down the field several times in the running game.
The freshman A-team Bulldogs played an incredibly hard fought game at home against the Bears, falling by a score of 38-20. Down 16-0 early in the game, the Bulldogs battled back behind quarterback Bryce
Boyd who punched in two touchdowns in the game.
Bandera brought the score to 16-14 before half-time before falling 38-20 in the second half.
The freshman B-team traveled to Sabinal and played close before the game was called early in the third quarter.
The seventh grade Bulldogs were led on defense by Kobee Andreas, who recorded several tackles on the
night, while on the offensive side of the ball Walker Sine connected on a nice touchdown pass with Travis Adams.
In eighth grade action, mistakes and turnovers killed the Bulldog offense. However, quarterback Tanner Farris and receiver Alex Cardenas connected for several long passes, while Farris, Chisom Magee, and Alex Jannell provided energetic plays in the running game. District play will begin this week as each level will battle the Wimberley Texans. The eighth grade and JV teams will head to Wimberley tonight with games beginning at 4:30. The freshman and seventh grade Bulldogs are hosting Wimberley tonight, with games also beginning at 4:30.
