JV battles to a draw with Comfort
By John Milner
On Thursday, Sept. 19, the Junior
Varsity Bandera football team
traveled to Comfort to try and
improve on their 1-2 record. In a
closely fought contest, the final
buzzer found the score tied 8-8.
During the first quarter, both teams'
offenses sputtered with the defenses
being dominant. The second quarter
saw much of the same with the
defenses wreaking havoc on the
intentions of the offenses. Each team
had an opportunity to score, but was
thwarted by penalties that brought
the scoring plays back without
For Bandera's defense, Jonathan
Daughtery contributed two fumble
recoveries to the cause and Tryston
Butler and Jerimiah Silone each
stopped Comfort drives with
Elijah MacNeil had a big hit with a
sack of the Bobcat quarterback.
The teams went to the locker room
at halftime with the score deadlocked
In the third quarter, Bandera's
offense took the cue from the
threatening rain clouds and
constructed a threat of their own.
The Bulldogs drove inside the
Comfort 10-yard line for a first and
goal. As the rain clouds moved away,
Bandera's scoring chance would
follow suit as the opportunity
evaporated when a fourth down pass
Gaining momentum from their
defense, Comfort's offense dug down
and constructed a 95-yard drive that
would consume the end of the third
quarter and the majority of the fourth
quarter. Aided by two Bulldog
penalties on fourth downs plays that
had the drive stopped, the Bobcats
eventually punched it in from 2 yards
out for the go ahead touchdown. A 2-
point conversion pass left the score
at 8-0 Comfort with four minutes left
in the game.
The Bulldogs responded behind
their powerful offensive line made up
of tackles Victor Vrazel and Nathan
Thaler, guards Nicholas Salas and
Roman Soto and center JT Milner to
drive down the field.
Quarterback Ruben Vargas and
running back Calvin Starnes used
the openings created by the line to
advance the ball toward the end
zone. Starnes capped things off with
a run that showcased his shiftiness
and powerful determination to score
from 49 yards out for the touchdown.
Starnes added the two point
conversion and once again the teams
were deadlocked, this time at 8-8.
The last two minutes saw each
team have opportunities to take the
lead but the defenses stepped up.
For Bandera, Ty Fernandez had a
fumble recovery and Silone added
his second interception of the game.
Nathan Thaler put Comfort's last
chance away with a sack of their
quarterback to preserve the 8-8 tie
as time ran out.
The JV Bulldogs' next contest will
be at home on Thursday, Sept. 26
when they wrestle the LaVernia Bears
at 7:30 pm.
