JV Bulldogs corral Longhorns
By John Milner
On Thursday, August 29, Bandera's JV football team traveled to George West to open their season and came away with a hard fought 14-6 victory.
The first quarter saw Bandera move the ball behind some tough running by quarterback Utah Hicks. Initially, penalties kept the Bulldogs from completing their early drives but eventually they would push into the end zone on a three yard Hicks run. The conversion pass fell incomplete leaving the score at 6-0 Bandera.
The second quarter was a standstill with the Bulldog defense led by Elijah MacNeil, Ruben Vargas and Jeremiah Silone keeping George West under control. Silone contributed a fumble recovery to stop one George West drive.
The defense continued to throttle the Longhorn offense in the third quarter by stopping them inside Bandera's 10-yard line on a fourth down play.
Momentum shifted soon after however when a Bulldog fumble was scooped up and into the end zone to tie the score 6-6. The extra point failed.
Bandera responded quickly by driving the length of the field in three plays with the score coming on a 39-yard touchdown run by Aiden Leal. Hicks ran in the two-point conversion to put the Bulldogs back in control by a 14-6 count.
The fourth quarter saw Bandera's defense controlling the game and the offense able run the clock out at the end to claim the victory.
With a record of 1-0, the JV Bulldogs look forward to their home opener tonight, Sept. 5 when they will take on the Devine Warhorses at 6:30 pm.
