Bulldogs battle with Medina Valley; fall by one touchdown

By Brady Keane BCC Contributor

The Bandera Bulldogs played host to the Medina Valley Panthers on Thursday August 22 in the final scrimmage of the pre-season, losing by a final score of 31-23. The Bulldogs offense struggled against the quick Panther defense early, before finally finding hitting the ground running and putting three touchdowns and a field goal on the board.
The passing game was again shared by the quarterback trio of junior Joe Rodriquez, senior Ty Pannell, and sophomore Utah Hicks. Rodriquez led the way going 14-21 passing with 112 yards and one interception, while Pannell went 5-7 for 31 yards and one interception, and Hicks went 6-9 for 10 yards. The big plays in the air came on a 40 yard bomb from Rodriquez to Noah Nelson late in the scrimmage, and on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Pannell to senior Joe Phair in the corner of the end zone.
The Bulldogs first touchdown of the night came on the ground from junior Alex Willoughby.
Willoughby seemed to spark the Bulldogs offense with his 72 yard touchdown run, getting Bandera on the scoreboard for the first time. Running backs Willoughby, junior Landon Ventura, and senior Brennan Aguirre combined for 101 yards rushing on the night, with Willoughby and Ventura each punching in a touchdown.
The defense held strong for much of the night against a tough and fast Medina Valley offense, as Pannell and junior Nick Andreas each got in on several tackles to slow down the Panthers attack. The Bulldogs again forced two fumbles, one of which would have been returned for a touchdown if the play had continued. The defensive line was led by senior Stephen Young at nose guard, while junior Averie Mansfield, Andreas, senior Ish McNeil, and junior Shane Reynolds led the linebackers. The secondary was led by Pannell, Phair, and senior Caleb Beauchamp at safety, and junior Kyle Bauml, senior Jonathan Stoufflet, and junior Wes Joseph at the cornerback spot.
The Bulldogs will take on the George West Longhorns tomorrow night at Bulldog Stadium with kickoff at 7:30 pm in the much anticipated season opening game. If you can't make the game, don't forget to tune into for a live broadcast from the stadium, with a re-broadcast Saturday at noon.
