Bulldogs defeat SA Christian in scrimmage

The Bandera Bulldogs varsity football team traveled to SA Christian on Friday, August 16, defeating the Lions by a score of 14-7. After a slow start, the Bulldogs offense was able to score twice while the defense held strong and forced three SA Christian turnovers.
Starting on the offensive side of the ball, Bandera failed to score on the first set of 15 plays, throwing one interception and gaining a total of 55 yards. The Bulldogs offense came alive towards the end of the first series with a pair of passes from senior Ty Pannell to senior Caleb Beauchamp and junior Kyle Bauml.
Sophomore Utah Hicks threw the first touchdown of the day to junior Alex Willoughby on a screen play that went for 26 yards. Junior Joe Rodriguez put the Bulldogs on the board later in the scrimmage with a 20 yard touchdown pass to junior Noah Nelson.
The Bulldog quarterback trio of Rodriguez, Pannell, and Hicks combined to go 15-25 passing for 139 yards and two touchdowns. The running core of Willoughby, junior Landon Ventura, and seniors Ish McNeil and Brennan Aguirre combined for 97 yards on just 10 carries while Pannell added 32 yards on 2 carries.
The Bulldogs spread the ball out to 12 different receivers on the night- Beauchamp had two catches for 31 yards, Nelson had one catch for 20 yards and a touchdown, Pannell had a catch for 2 yards, Joe Phair had two catches for 7 yards, Ventura caught two passes for 10 yards, Bauml had a catch for 11 yards, senior Jonathan Stoufflet hauled in a catch for 2 yards, junior Wes Joseph had a catch for 2 yards, junior Brady Keane had one catch for 18 yards, Willoughby scored a touchdown on a catch for 26 yards, McNeil had a catch for 15 yards, and junior Averie Mansfield had a catch for 5 yards.
On defense, the Bulldogs secondary held the Lions to 8-17 passing with no touchdowns. In the secondary, Pannell broke up several passes with hard hits as the safety, while cornerbacks Stoufflet, Bauml, and Joseph shut down the Lion receivers on the outside. Senior Stephen Young was in the backfield several times for the Bulldogs, and drew a double team from the Lions' offensive line for most of the night.
The linebacking corps was led by Willoughby who recorded a sack and two fumble recoveries and senior Reed Blake who had a sack, with McNeil, Mansfield, and Ventura getting in on several tackles for the Bulldogs.
With two scrimmages now under their belt, the Bulldogs will continue preparations for next Friday's season opening game against George West with another scrimmage tonight against the Medina Valley Panthers. The scrimmages start at 7 pm for JV and freshmen and 8 pm for the varsity.
