Last weekend, the Bandera Bulldog JV basketball squad traveled to Devine to take part in the annual Devine basketball tournament. After sweeping the field by an average margin of over 20 points, the Bulldogs remained undefeated and improved to an impressive 11-0 on the season.
Opening play on Thursday, the Bulldogs came out looking sluggish and paid for it against a much improved Pleasanton team. After maintaining a close lead the entire game, the Bulldogs managed to squeak out a 26-25 victory in the fourth quarter. Although winning by their lowest margin this season, the Bulldogs did show the ability to overcome countless mistakes, and pull out a close victory.
Later in the day, Bandera took on the hosting Devine Warhorses and maintained a steady lead throughout the game. The Bulldog guards, led by Jonathan Raitz, did a great job feeding it into the Bandera big men down low, enroute to a 39-17 victory over the Warhorses.
On Friday, the Bulldogs came back to Devine looking to improve on the victories from the day before. Facing Blanco, Bandera dominated from the opening tip-off as CJ Shade, Corey Jennings, and Averie Mansfield overpowered the Blanco defense in the paint.
Winning by a score of 58-26, the Bulldogs put themselves into position to take the championship back home on Saturday morning. In the Championship game, the Jourdanton Indians were no match for the Bulldogs, as Bandera built up a 50-8 lead at halftime and then cruised towards a 64-24 championship win.
With two tournament trophies under their belt, and a zero in the loss column, the Bulldogs have four games remaining until the district season begins on Jan. 11. This Friday, the Bulldogs will take on the Llano Yellow Jackets in Llano, with times still TBA.
