2012-11-29Somerset edges Bandera in clash of Lady Bulldogs

The Somerset Lady Bulldogs raced out to a 31-21 halftime lead before holding off a second half rally by the Lady Bulldogs of Bandera to earn a hard-fought 48-43 victory in non-district basketball action played on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Bandera.
In the clash of the Lady Bulldogs, both teams played hard from the beginning as the first period ended in a 15-15 deadlock. In the second period, Somerset struck for 16 points and took advantage of a Bandera scoring lapse (6 points) to take a 31-21 lead at the half. The Lady Bulldogs of Bandera outscored Somerset 22-17 in the second half but it wasn't enough for the win.
The Lady Bulldogs of Somerset prevailed 48-43. Briana Mayhew led Bandera scorers with 9 points while Nicky Schoelles and Shae Hopf hit for 8 points each for the home team. Hopf was 2 of 3 from 3-point range. Cassie Henk (5), Nina Russell (4), Jordan Junker (4), Emily Frost (2), Casey Olsen (2) and Taylor Schultz (1) round out the Bandera Lady Bulldog offensive effort against Somerset.
Hopf, Junker and Mayhew led the Bandera girls in rebounds with 5 each. Olsen had 3 blocked shots and Henk 4 steals for the Lady Dogs on defense.
The Lady Bulldog JV team defeated Somerset 40-27 to bring their overall record to 7-3. Leading scorers for the Lady Bulldog JV were Laurynn Winters with 10 points and Kate Martin with 8.
The Lady Bulldogs continued action on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Medina Valley and will participate in the Marion Tournament to be played on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1 at Marion. Times and matchups are to be announced.
