The Medina Bobcats will travel to D'Hanis on Friday, Oct. 12 to open the 2012 District 15 1A Division ll football season against the undefeated Cowboys led by last year's district MVP quarterback Chance Barlow. Kickoff in D'Hanis will be at 7:30 pm.
The Cowboys are off to a quick start this year and have compiled a perfect 5-0 record during the non-district portion of the schedule and are the favorite for the top spot in 15 1A this year. Barlow brings a double threat to the contest having passed for over 2500 yards and 32 touchdowns last season while rushing for an additional 533 yards and 8 scores to lead the Cowboy offensive attack.
The Bobcats are coming off a 2-3 non-district season and are recovering from some minor bumps and bruises but hope to have their starters ready to go at D'Hanis.
Medina Head Coach Brandon Allen is confident that his team will be ready to take on the district front-running Cowboys on Friday night. "I feel like we are ready to step up to the level of competition they offer," Allen said. "It was good for us to play against Runge and Brackett because it let us compete at a higher level and we gained a lot of experience in doing so."
Sabinal is currently 4-1 following the non-district season while Medina and Nueces Canyon share identical 2-3 marks. Rocksprings and Leakey sit at 1-4 going into the district season.
The Bobcats will be counting heavily on the offensive performances of senior quarterback JD Ortiz and senior running back Adrian Jackson along with a defensive unit that hopes to shut down opponents' offensive efforts. Jackson is back to 100 percent after seeing limited duty in the past two games against Brackett and at Runge. Ortiz is also a double threat to either run or pass to keep the Medina offensive unit rolling.
