The Bandera Bulldogs played host to the San Antonio Christian Lions on Saturday, August 18, for the first football scrimmage action of the 2012 season for both teams.
Attendance at Bulldog stadium was high as the Bulldogs and Lions squared off for nearly two hours in live, full-contact scrimmage action.
Former NBA and Spurs superstar David Robinson was in attendance to watch his son Corey, a wide receiver for the Lions, perform in the scrimmage.
The younger Robinson, a junior bound for Notre Dame, put on an impressive performance with six catches that included a pair of touchdowns for the Lions.
Overall, the action was intense on both sides of the ball as the Bulldogs and Lions kept up their preparation for the upcoming season.
Bandera Head Coach and Athletic Director Larry Prince praised the overall Bulldog effort while pointing out specific areas of improvement on both sides of the ball.
"We are very pleased with the offensive effort beginning up front with the line play. Mitchell Keese (guard), Travis Whitefield (center), Hunter Prince (tackle), Aaron Shackleford (guard) and Logan Breen (tackle) all did a really good job.
Michael Miller (quarterback) was good in his reads and progressions and we executed pretty well," Prince said.
"We moved the ball well considering we were on a script," Prince added. "Defensively, we did well up front with Corey Jennings having a big effort along with Chase Haddad and Shackleford. Our inside linebackers played pretty well again and our outside backers, Jacob Berger, Stevie Chesshir and Fabian Muniz had good efforts also," Prince continued.
"In the secondary, Miller played really well, Caleb Beauchamp did a good job and Justin Brann was credited with the big hit of the scrimmage," Prince remarked.
The Bulldogs continue scrimmage action on Friday, August 24, against the Medina Valley Panthers and San Antonio Highlands at the SAISD Sports Complex beginning at 6 pm. The complex is located at Interstate 10 and 35, south of 10 and east of 35.
Freshmen and JV action will start at 5 pm.
Following this week's scrimmage action, the Bulldogs will open the 2012 non-district season the following week on Friday, August 31, at George West. Kickoff at George West will be at 7:30 pm.
