From former record holder

For about 22 years, I was the proud owner of the Sul Ross State University field goal record. In fact, I’m proud to say that I had accomplished a task not met by any other athlete at Sul Ross since it was founded in 1917.

My daughter and wife have heard the story so many times, that they are sick of hearing it. With pride I still tell how I kicked the longest field goal in school history to friends, family, and the kids I coach now.

However, when I informed my family that Mike Van Wagner of Bandera drilled a 57-yard field goal for the Lobos on Saturday, they were very happy not to have to hear my story for the next 22 years.

In fact, I am writing this note to congratulate Mike Van Wagner on his awesome kick. I know the great feeling he has now and I hope that for the next 22 years – or more – he can brag a little and feel the pride of owning a Sul Ross Lobo football record.
