Fred William Smart
1933-2010
Fred William Smart passed away Friday, Jan. 1.
He was born in Utopia on Dec. 1, 1933, to Bill and Ruth Smart.
He spent many of his younger years in Medina where his father was engaged in the ranching and livestock business.
Fred graduated from Goldthwaite High School as class president and FFA member. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with a broadcasting degree.
After joining the United States Navy in 1956, Fred served on the USS Tarawa. After being honorably discharged in 1962, Fred returned to Texas and earned a real estate license from the University of Houston.
His love of the sea – combined with the necessity of staying on land – directed him towards a career as a marine surveyor until his retirement.
As a resident of Humble for over 30 years, Fred leaves behind – much too soon – a loving family, many friends and loved ones.
He is survived by his brother Norman Smart and his wife, Gwen, of Winters; sister Patricia Bishop and her husband, Charles, of Utopia; son John Smart and his wife, Lisa, of Spring; son William Allen Smart of Cathedral City, California; daughter Renee Reed and her husband, Buddy, of Bandera; and grandson Austin Smart and granddaughter Krista Hopkins, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at Utopia’s Waresville Cemetery, Thursday, Jan. 7, with a viewing at 1 pm and service at 2 pm. Flowers can be delivered to the Church of Christ in Utopia.
