Charles Antoine Cooper

1920-2017

Charles Antoine Cooper, 97, of Medina, Texas, returned to the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, in Bandera, Texas. He was born in San Marcos, Texas, to Leslie A. Cooper and Margaret Hanson on Sept. 11, 1920. He married Laverta Green on May 15, 1945, in Ashville, North Carolina.
He attended school in San Marcos. He graduated from SWTSTC with a Bachelor of Arts degree and Oklahoma A & M with a Master of Science degree. He was principle of schools in Utopia, Texas, Martindale, Texas. He taught school for 25 years in the NEISD in San Antonio, Texas. He was known as a math expert and creating games to teach mathematics. He retired to a life of selling antiques out of his home in San Antonio.
He joined the U. S. Army in 1941 and fought as a sergeant in the Army Infantry in North Africa and Italy. He fought at the landing of Salerno and was awarded the Bronze Star, among other medals.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laverta Green Cooper; daughter, Evelyn A. Cooper; and son, Leslie W. Cooper.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Margaret Wintersole; son, Charles H. Cooper; grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren, and his loving dogs Bows and Minnie Cooper.
A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at Grimes Funeral Chapels of Bandera.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at Medina First United Methodist Church with Pastor Bill Stegmueller officiating. To be followed by a meal gathering. Burial will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio at 10:15 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017.
Pallbearers will be Frank Zapata, Jim Jones, Charlie Cooper, Henry Neal, David Neal and Gary Cooper.
