Successful forum - local candidates on Jan 23

By Susan Junker BCC Contributor

Despite the morning chill temperature of Saturday, Jan. 16, the Post 157 American Legion Hall quickly warmed as over 50 local citizens and nine candidates for United States Congressional District 21 and the Texas Senate District 24 participated in the first candidate forum of 2016.
Each candidate provided a three-minute introduction and their platform, followed by questions from the audience and local sponsors - American Legion Post 157, Bandera County Chamber of Commerce and the Ranchers & Landowners Association of Texas.
Congressional District 21 candidates who participated were Matt McCall, Boerne and John Murphy and Todd Phelps, both of Austin.
Addressing questions, several focused on differentiating themselves from incumbent, Lamar Smith. Despite diverse backgrounds, many of their views converge in areas of values and priorities. Several provided detailed statistics and examples of their accomplishments in business and engineering that would translate to their approaches to solving problems in the House of Representatives.
The Texas Senate District 24 candidates on hand included Dawn Buckingham, Austin; Jon Cobb, Bee Cave; Ryan Downton, Salado; Brent Mayes, Fredericksburg; and Reed Williams, Burnet County.
They presented "conservative" oriented values and platforms, as well as their ideas for addressing such issues as property rights, small business challenges, unfunded mandates to counties, energy, water, and public education, among others. The 2016 March Primary Election will mark the first time an incumbent will not be in this race in nearly 20 years.
The primary election will be held Tuesday, March 1. More information on voting in Texas can be found at http://elections.mytimetovote.com/texas.html and the link to the Bandera County elections site, http://www.banderacounty.org/departments/ElectionAdministrator.htm.
The same sponsors will host a local forum for both candidates and incumbents from 10 am to noon, Saturday, Jan. 23, the Bandera American Legion Post 157, 205 12th Street. For more information, call 830-796-7528 - and learn before you vote.
