Derly M. Gutierrez


Derly M. Gutierrez, 83, a resident of Pipe Creek, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, at River View Nursing Home in Boerne with his wife, Joyce, at his side.
Chief Gutierrez was born Jan. 19, 1931 in Laredo.
After graduating from Freer High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer.
While serving his country, Chief Gutierrez was awarded the Silver Star signifying the third gold leaf and received several combat medals during the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Subsequently, as an electronics engineer, he worked for the National Aviation Service, setting up autopilots. During his 40 years of service, electronics remained his passion.
Chief Gutierrez is survived by his wife and best friend, Joyce Mae Gutierrez; son Derly Gutierrez and his wife, Lucy; sons, David and Daniel; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by the mother of his children, Beatrice Gutierrez, and daughter Cynthia Gutierrez.
A funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 19, from Hillside Funeral Home to San Martin De Porres Catholic Church. Pallbearers were his son Derly; grandsons, Dack and Derrick; stepson Mitchell Ross; and friends.
Chief Gutierrez was interred with full military honors and a 21-gun salute at the City of Laredo Cemetery, Military Section.
