V. Joyce Ottinger
V. Joyce Ottinger passed away Wednesday, June 11. She was born on April 22, 1938 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Vincent and Hilda Long.
Joyce graduated from the Bryn Mawr College School of Nursing in 1959. She moved to San Antonio in 1976 and to Lakehills in 1987.
After relocating to San Antonio, Joyce began a 20-year career as an operating room nurse at Methodist Hospital.
In addition to her nursing career, she also began raising ostriches with her husband, Jack. They became quite skilled in the production of the birds. After retiring, the couple moved to Bandera and made improving their homestead their avocation.
Joyce's other passions included reading and research into the human spirit.
A 30-year survivor of breast cancer, she developed a brain tumor unusual enough that she decided to donate her body to science in hopes of advancing cancer research.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Jack; daughter Lisa Kenoyer, and sons, Todd and Brett Corbett, all in the San Antonio area; sister Linda Jordan of Houston; and brother Paul Long of Pennsylvania, as well as by her grandchildren, twins Allison and Denise Kenoyer and Tim and Todd Corbett.
The family wishes to thank Dr. James Young and all the staff at Peterson Hospice in Kerrville for contributing medical, material and spiritual help and support during Joyce's illness.
The response during her illness of those who knew and loved her was all the recognition Joyce desired. Any ceremony will be within the family.
Donations in Joyce's name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
