Vernon Marcus Porter


Vernon Marcus Porter, 86, of Utopia, passed away Thursday, March 20, in Kerrville. He was born in Utopia on Jan. 12, 1928 to James Verl and Veonita Porter.
Vernon married Charlsie Mae Walker on June 8, 1950 in Utopia.
He graduated from Utopia High School and later from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. Vernon taught vocational agriculture for 11 years in Medina and Uvalde.
After moving back to Utopia to operate the family ranch, he also taught and coached for 19 years in the Utopia Independent School District.
Vernon was active in many local organizations, most notably the 38 years he served with the Bandera County Soil and Water Conservation District for which he was recognized in 2010 with the honor of Lifetime Honorary Director.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and educator, Vernon will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlsie Porter; children, Bob Porter and his wife, Kerry; Kathy Campbell; Jeanie Minton and her husband, Shreves, of Utopia, all of Utopia; and Lori McGuffin of Kerrville; grandchildren, Brent Porter and his wife, Stephanie; Walker Porter; Marcy Herndon and her husband, Bryan; RJ Jones; Ryon Jones and his wife, Laura; Royce Jones; Misty Zrzavy and her husband, Clint; Kristina Rhodes and her husband, James; Kade McGuffin; and Michaela McGuffin; and great-grandchildren, Wyatt Porter, Katharine Porter, Trace Herndon, Brady Herndon, Ashton Jones, Eli Jones, Brendan McBee, Zayne Zrzavy, Brett Zrzavy, Dustin Rhodes, Macee Rhodes and Morgan Rhodes.
Vernon was predeceased by his parents; brothers, JE Porter and Lester Ray Porter; sister Ida Fay White; and son Jerry Lynn Porter.
A funeral service was held Sunday, March 23, at Utopia United Methodist Church with Rev. Chuck Crane officiating. Interment followed at Waresville Cemetery in Utopia.
Pallbearers were Brent Porter, Walker Porter, RJ Jones, Ryon Jones, Royce Jones and Kade McGuffin, with Vernon's numerous friends and former students serving as honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Utopia EMS, Utopia United Methodist Church, Utopia ISD or to a charity of choice.
