Sherlie Vangsnes, 87, of Bandera, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, in a San Antonio hospital. She was born in McHenry County, Illinois on March 7, 1926 to Arthur Thor Bennett and Martha Skrogstad Bennett.
Sherlie married Sherman Vangsnes on July 15, 1984 in Encino, Texas.
After graduating from St. Luke's Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, she later earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. After serving as an ICU nurse and public health nurse in Hidalgo County, Sherlie worked at the VA Medical Center in Kerrville. Sherlie also served on the building committee for the Arthur Nagel Community Clinic.
An avid quilter, she was a member of the Bandera Quilt Guild. She was also a certified Master Gardener, a member of the Native Plant Society and the Madrona Garden Club and was an avid bird watcher, gardener and naturalist. Additionally, Sherlie belonged to the San Antonio Scandinavians.
She was a member of Little Rock Presbyterian Church of Pipe Creek.
Sherlie is survived by her husband, Sherman R. Vangsnes; daughters, Kittrin Prasil and her husband, Ed, and Cynthia Lappin; son, James Lappin and his wife, Maria; and stepsons, Lynn Vangsnes and his wife, Bonnie; Bradley Vangsnes and his wife, Susan; and Donn Vangsnes and his wife, Shelly, as well as by 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Sherlie was predeceased by her son, Lee Lappin; Richard Lappin, the father of her children; two sisters; and a brother.
A visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm, Friday, Feb. 7, at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 am Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Little Rock Presbyterian Church of Pipe Creek with Rev. Dr. Robert Ward officiating.
