John Borges Leal


John Borges Leal, 77, of Bandera, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 23, in Bandera. He was born in Artesia, California on August 9, 1937 to John and Mary Leal.
John married Patricia Pipkin on April 30, 1978 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
For most of his life, he worked as a truck driver. John also owned a number of his own businesses, including a restaurant, livestock company and a small horse ranch. A veteran of the Korean War, John served in the United States Army from 1957 to1960.
For 35 years, he was extremely active in tall phases of the Oakdale Saddle Club, including serving as chairman of the rodeo kickoff dance and cattle penning events for a number of years.
John is survived by his wife, Patricia Leal; siblings, Diane Silva and her husband, Cirilo; Joseph Leal and his wife, Judi; Linda Moreno and her husband, Mike; and Darlene Jackson and her husband, TJ; children, Debora Riekirk; Joann Swanson and her husband, John; Larry Leal and his wife Kim LaRee; and Cheryl Foster; grandchildren, Brianna Cook and Jordan Cook; Ryan Riekirk; David Morris and his wife, Dawn Marie; and Jennifer Leal, Jordan Leal and Brittany Leal; and great-grandchildren, Dominic Jared, Abigail LaRee, Sascha Maren, Hailey Rose and Alissa Corrine.
John was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Leal; his little brother, Danny Leal, who was killed in Vietnam); and his son, John Leal IV.
Celebration of life services were held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Bandera with Pastor Bob Devora officiating.
