Hazel Joyce Heinen Richards

Hazel Joyce Heinen Richards, 84, of Bandera, passed away on Friday, Jan. 24, in Bandera. She was born April 13, 1929 to Dovie B. Bass Heinen and Frank Joseph Heinen in Bandera.

Hazel married HH "Buddy" Richards on Sept. 25, 1946 in Boerne, and they were married for 60 years.

She attended school in Bandera.

Hazel and Buddy owned two restaurants in Bandera, Buddy's Café from 1949-1959, and Dude's Drive-In from 1968-1980. The couple loved serving up delicious meals to friends and family - and made lots of fun memories doing so. Hazel also worked at Piggly Wiggly in Kerrville and Collins of Texas in Medina.

She loved fishing, hunting, camping, gardening and cooking. Favorite trips were to Colorado with her husband. She also loved western movies and books and family gatherings.
Hazel might have been small in stature, but if her kids did something wrong, she could really let them know they'd had a spanking. She always would say, "It's gonna hurt me more than it hurts you." We kids were not sure of that, but we knew she loved us all very much.

Hazel is survived by five children, Carolyn Richards of Bandera; Ronnie Richards and his wife, Katie, of Medina; Gary Richards and his wife, Geneva, of New Braunfels; Sharon Cabiness of Bandera; and Buddie Richards and his wife, Shelly, of Tarpley; and sister Lois Heinen Hayes of Bandera, as well as by 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother, father, husband, granddaughter, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, four brothers and four sisters.

Hazel's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Jaafar and his staff, River City Hospice and the entire staff of Cedar Creek. She resided at Cedar Creek Nursing Center for over 7 years. The kindness shown to her by their staff is much appreciated by her loved ones.

Visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm, Friday, Jan. 31, at Grimes Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be held at Grimes Chapel at 1 pm, Saturday, Feb. 1, at Grimes Chapel, with Martin Smith of the Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Bandera Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brian Richards, Aaron Weed, Chris Richards, Quint Cabiness, David Stevens and Gene McCulloch.
