James Edward Popham Sr.
James Edward Popham Sr. rode away through the sunset on Wednesday, Sept. 25, into the eternal sunrise.
He was born on August 8, 1940, in San Antonio to Charlie James Popham and Lillian Emily Clara Shadrock.
James grew up in Adkins with his brothers, Marvin; Martin "Bud"; and CJ and his wife, Dorothy; and sisters, Beulah "Sister" and her husband, IM Duncan; and Jane Ellen and her husband, Jerry Taylor. He lost a baby sister, Alice, early in life.
James entered the United States Navy in December 1957, serving three years six months and 29 days. During that time, he was stationed at San Diego, California, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
James was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. He later served in the US Navy Reserves for two years.
After leaving the navy, James followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a carpenter.
He married Mary Lou Sutton on August 18, 1963. They were married until her death in 2005. The couple was blessed with six children, Raymond and his wife, Teresa; James Jr. "Bubba," and his wife, Rose; Teddy and his wife, Jamie; Michael; Lisa Alanis and her husband, Brian; and Brian and his wife, Christa. James and Mary also had 14 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
James and Mary, along with his sons, owned and operated several successful contracting businesses. The couple also owned Hill Country Inn in Lakehills.
James enjoyed hunting, dancing and reading. In his later years, he also enjoyed remodeling, watching western films, spending time with his family and dancing with his friend, Margie Allen.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 30, beneath the oak trees of the Pipe Creek Cemetery.
