Sue Ellen Smith
Sue Ellen Smith, 66, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, August 11, in San Antonio. She was born in Edinburgh, Texas on June 20, 1947 to Dennis and Ruby French.
An active member of the Medina community, she was married to Jackson Kelly Smith Jr. for more than 20 years.
After graduating salutatorian from San Marcos High School, Sue Ellen received a BA degree from Texas State University, graduating magna cum laude. She was recognized in Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities for being active in many university organizations.
Sue Ellen received masters and PhD degrees in music from the University of North Texas. During her career, she taught all levels of music education, voice, music courses and served as opera director at the University of Northern Alabama, Tarleton State University, Wayland Baptist University, Tarrant County Junior College and Northwestern University in Louisiana.
Sue Ellen also received a law degree from Baylor Law School although she never practiced law.
After retiring and moving to Medina, she became president of the Rose Garden Club of Medina and was known for her hard work and dedication to the club. She also was the Medina reporter for the Bandera Bulletin.
In addition to being an avid bird watcher, Sue Ellen grew over 50 varieties of antique and found roses as well as a large vegetable garden. Her dedication, love of life and helpfulness will be missed by all.
She is survived by her husband, Jackson Smith Jr., of Medina; mother Ruby French of Wimberley; and brother Larry French and his wife, Bryan, of College Station.
Sue Ellen was predeceased by her father, Dennis French, of Wimberley.
A graveside service was held at Wimberley Cemetery, Friday August 16.
A memorial service was held at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Bandera, Monday, August 19.
